Introduction

“Red” is a series of portraits depicting various states of mind. I allude to the awkwardness of gaffes and misunderstandings; to the judgments and manipulations that often arise in interaction; and to a sustained curiosity toward one another despite inherent faults and complexities. Depictions of common physical imperfections inform the work. Bruises, abrasions, pimples, bug bites, blemishes, moles, freckles, scars and the like appear throughout the series, highlighting a sense of vulnerability.

Each portrait was first executed in charcoal on paper. The images were then transferred from paper to wooden panels prepared with wax. Each image was created through repeated applications of wax and pigment. A textured mat surface was created by scoring and scraping.
